A tradie from Melbourne expressed frustration after paying a hefty sum to an SEO firm for a new website that generated only four monthly views and no sales. Jason Rainsforth, the owner of Dependant Electrical, engaged Supple Digital for a 24-month contract promising SEO services with location-based keywords.
Despite investing close to $20,000, Rainsforth received no leads through the website and witnessed a decline in Google rankings. His monthly expense of $1150 seemed unjustified as the promised results failed to materialize. When he requested a review of the strategy, the firm suggested additional payments for more keywords.
Dependant Electrical, with a monthly turnover of $20,000, found the SEO costs to be a significant burden without commensurate benefits. Rainsforth, while acknowledging the lack of guaranteed outcomes, felt misled as he was shown success stories of other clients during the onboarding process.
Consumer advocate Adam Glezer highlighted the importance of prioritizing clients’ interests in such agreements. He emphasized the impact of substantial costs on small businesses, urging a focus on delivering tangible results rather than maximizing revenue.
Supple Digital, founded by Nishant Shah and Hardy Desai, has garnered recognition for its services but faced criticism for underdelivering on promises. The Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman has observed a significant number of disputes related to digital marketing services, indicating a prevalent issue in the industry.
Research commissioned by ASBFEO revealed a lack of digital literacy among small business owners, leading to challenges in discerning the value of services provided by marketing firms. The study highlighted instances of providers pushing unnecessary and expensive services without delivering the promised outcomes.
Rainsforth’s experience underscores the need for transparency and accountability in digital marketing engagements. The case serves as a cautionary tale for businesses considering SEO investments, emphasizing the importance of due diligence and clear communication in vendor relationships.
